19TH C CARVED MAHOGANY CAKE BOARD, SIGNED WATKINS19th century carved mahogany cake board with central relief-carved bird, flower, wreath and scalloped border designs, signed "J.Y. Watkins, NY", lower right corner. 8 1/4" H x 8 5/8" W. New York, Mid-to-Late 19th century. Note: James Y. Watkins was the successor to John Conger, one of the most famous New York mold makers and bakers from 1825 to 1845. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition:
Retains old patina. Age crack upper right corner, losses to lower right corner. Old hole to upper left and right corners.

WATKINS CARLTON C.1870: YOSEMITE FALLS FROM SENTINEL DOME Toned albumen print. Watkins was born in Oneonta NY and travelled to San Francisco during the gold rush in 1851. He began his career as a photographer's assistant and began working on his own in 1861. He took photos of mining scenes and of the Yosemite Valley. He became famous for a series of photographs and stereoviews made in the early 1860's that helped influence the U.S. Congress to establish the Yosemite Valley as a national park in 1864. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Gerald Kornblau. 11 3/4 x 8 in. 21 x 17 in. (frame).
