WARNER KOIYAQUAPTEWA, WARRIOR MOUSE (TOSON HóMIITSI)Warner Koiyaquaptewa, (20th/21st century) Warrior Mouse (Toson Hómiitsi), carved wood, pigments, leather, string inscribed underside: Georgia 1982 Toson Hómìitsi (which literally means sweet-corn-loving mouse) is better known as Warrior Mouse is not a katsina but a figure from one of the Hopi folktales. In the story he is constantly threatened by a hawk and in turns he tells the hawk to leave or he will vanquish it in battle. The hawk of course does not take him seriously and neither do the people in the village. Toson Hómìitsi nonetheless proceeds to prepare for battle and prepare a warrior song. On the appointed day, hawk begins his attack and in the ensuing battle, Toson Hómìitsi prevails and kills the hawk.
