Born in 1933, Bassler was introduced to the tradition of textile making by his father. He was drafted into the U.S. army in 1953, and would gain further appreciation for world craft making through his travels to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Bassler would go on to teach at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Arts and Architecture for 25 years, as well as the Appalachian Center for Crafts, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and the Penland School of Crafts. Bassler's work has been exhibited at the Textile Museum at George Washington University, the Denver Art Museum and the American Craft Museum in New York, NY, among others.
