RARE MARIHUANA (ROADSHOW
RARE MARIHUANA (ROADSHOW ATTRACTIONS, 1936) POSTER Although the film was about the evils of smoking marijuana, the artwork on the poster would lead one to believe the film was actually about heroin. And when Dwain Esper produced this film, that was the message he was conveying-- that the use of marijuana is addicting after just one puff, and would lead to heroin addiction. The lead character, a teenage girl, goes from smoking marijuana on a beach one night, to getting pregnant and becoming a heroin dealer who is forced to give up her baby for adoption. The film is one of the true cult classics of the 1930s and became far more popular on college campuses in the 1960s for its "campiness" than when it was first released. The posters for the film were as low budget as the picture itself and are quite rare as the film didn't play in major theatres

'MOTHER & SON' OIL WITH OLD
'MOTHER & SON' OIL WITH OLD THOMAS LAWRENCE ATTRIBUTIONCondition
Restoration and cleaning of the painting was executed by James Roth of the Nelson Gallery in 1965. At that time, he re-lined the canvas with linen, removed varnish and overpaint, and applied a new coating of varnish.
Presently, there is modest craquelure across the surface, but not to a distracting degree. There are two areas of relatively minor scratches (one to the top left above the figures' heads, one to the mother's garments left of her elbow), and there is a minor loss of a chip of paint (1/8") to the top left-center. The antique frame has some losses to the gilt gesso.
