GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
MONGOLIA, ZANABAZAR SCHOOL ?? ??????? ?????????finely cast seated in padmasana on a raised double lotus throne, a large vase containing the elixir of longevity cradled in his hands in dhyana mudra, wearing a low dhoti detailed with incised hem, a scarf flowing fluidly through his broad shoulders, elaborate necklace adorned his chest, further with jewellery on wrists, arms, and calves, large earrings flanked the meditative face below a five-leaf flame-like crown, hair tied up in high coiffure topped with a large jewel, stream-like long locks emerging from back of the head cascading down and spilling onto the throne, the baseplate gilt and incised with a double-vajra(1)32cm high; 5001gProvenance: Formerly in a private English collectionNote: Wearing a dignified expression and princely appearance, this Buddha of Infinite Life, seated on a stepped lotus base, resonates the artistic paradigms of the celebrated Mongolian Buddhist teacher and artist Jebstundampa Khutukhtu Zanabazar (1635-1723). The legacy of his sculptural style is recognisable by rich gilding and at times painted details on voluptuous portrayal of the female form, or, in this case, a masculine rendition of male form, shown through the powerful broad shoulders. The textile patterns, distinguished jewellery designs, smooth contours, sensitive modelling of the faces, fine arches of Amitayus' brows and his aquiline nose are also of his atelier. [1]Two comparable gilt-bronze figures of Amitayus, 19th century, are in the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts, HAR. 50243 & 50306, note the former with similarity of the lotus base depicts wide petals placed on a high pedestal finished with a beaded rim together with vertical lines imitating the ridges of a lotus pod, and the latter with elaborate vase of longevity; Several other examples can be found in auctions, including one, 18th century, sold at Bonham's Hong Kong, 29 May 2022, lot 140; one sold at Christie's London, 15 May 2018, lot 167; and one at Christie's New York, 31 Mar 2005, lot 188. RARE WEST TENNESSEE NEEDLEWORK
RARE WEST TENNESSEE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, LUCY MACON GREE...Rare West Tennessee Needlework Sampler, stitched by Lucy Macon Green and dated 1842, silk on linen. Strawberry border enclosing five rows of alphabets and a geometric border over a signature line, LUCY M. GREEN AGE 11 YEARS 1842; two stitched conjoined hearts beside a verse, "Celestial happiness when'er she stoops / To visit earth one shrine - the goddess finds / And one alone to make her sweet amends / For absent heav'n the bosom of a friend." Below is a row of stitched numbers and geometric floral motifs, and the names of her parents, Simon W. Green and Mary M. Green, brother Joseph T. Green, and twin sister Marianna (Mary) H. Green. 1934 note en verso from the stitcher's daughter, bequeathing it to a friend, along with a photograph of a period painting of a woman said to be Lucy Macon Green Wright. Housed in a later ebonized molded frame. Sight: 16" H x 17" W. Framed: 18" H x 18 3/4" W. Note: This sampler, one of fewer than 20 known to have been made in West Tennessee, has been documented by the Tennessee Sampler Survey. Lucy Macon Green and her twin sister Marianna Hunt Green were born in Warren or Guildford County, NC on March 3, 1831 to Simon W. Green (1805-1842) and Mary Hunt Seymour Macon (1809-1840). Around 1835 the family moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee, but Lucy's parents both died about five years later. Her father's will shows he owned 41 slaves and a vast amount of livestock at the time of his death. Lucy likely made her sampler at the Female Academy in Jackson in 1842, the same year her father died. She and her sister were then raised by a guardian, a maternal uncle named Dr. John Tubb Macon, and continued their education at the Jackson Female Academy (which became the Memphis Conference Female Institute in 1844). Lucy met Dr. Weldon Edwards Wright (himself an orphan) while visiting friends in Memphis. They married in 1854 and after a brief time in Princeton, Arkansas, moved to Little Rock. There he purchased the home of Sen. Solon Borland, and the couple raised four children including Sally Lea Wright Brame (1863-1944), who is believed to have inherited this sampler and gifted it to a friend (see note en verso of sampler). We are grateful to the Tennessee Sampler Survey for providing a packet of genealogical information on Lucy Macon Green Wright, which is available to the winning bidder.
Private Tennessee collection.
Condition:
Fading, particularly to family member's names and row of numbers; some losses to black thread, primarily in alphabet lines; light toning. Not examined out of frame; does not appear to be adhered to backing.

PORTRAIT OF SITTING BULL,
PORTRAIT OF SITTING BULL, CAROLINE WELDON, 1890Oil on canvas painting of Lakota Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, by Caroline Weldon (Swiss/American, 1844-1921). Weldon (nee Susanna Carolina Faesch) reportedly painted four portraits of Sitting Bull, two of which were presumed to be lost. The other two are in museums. (One of these is a very similar portrait -- though not nearly as well-painted -- that hangs in the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock. The other is in the collection of the North Dakota Historical Society in Bismarck.) Weldon was portrayed by Jessica Chastain in the 2017 movie, Woman Walks Ahead, which chronicles (albeit with some dramatic historical license) Weldon's amicable, occasionally contentious relationship with Sitting Bull. His name appears lower left, signed and dated lower right. Painting measures 27" x 22" in original 35-1/2" x 30-1/2" frame. Provenance: Originally in possession of railroad construction engineer, William Lafayette Darling of Minnesota, involved in construction and repair of rail lines in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota during the 1890s. Thence by descent to the consignor. Craquelure. Professionally strip (edge) relined, with new stretcher. Minor inpainting, mostly along edges and fur collar. L-shaped patch repair, about 2" wide, on (his) right shoulder. Frame good. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own. This item must be paid for with bank check, ACH, or wire transfer.
