Edwin Dews, publisher. Dimensions: 14" x 20.5" sight. Framed 21.75" x 28.5". Provenance: Thomas Schuyler Hathaway, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and thence by descent.Grogan & Company, Boston Massachusetts, October 1994, purchased by Richard Kelton.The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.This hand-colored lithograph depicts an event that dealt one of the final blows to the American whaling industry: In September 1871, off Cape Belcher, Alaska, 34 whaling vessels, including 21 from New Bedford, became trapped in the ice and had to be abandoned. A total of 180 whaleboats carrying 1,219 whalemen were rescued and carried to safety by only seven surviving whaleships. Amazingly, there were no casualties. This lithograph is based on drawings by Captain William H. Kelley, master of the whaleship Gay Head , which was one of the vessels abandoned and lost during the catastrophe.

Description Circa 1850. Excellent dual theme tooth that is well done on both sides. Depicts the icy Arctic conditions that the seamen had to endure. Scrim is very good. The tooth has an age crack near the tip of the tooth.

FRAMED 18.5" X 24.5".SET OF FOUR PRINTS "ABANDONMENT OF THE WHALERS IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN SEPT. 1871", Circa 1872, Published by Benjamin Russell, New Bedford, Massachusetts, J.H. Bufford, lithographer, Boston. Includes plates 1, 2, 4 and 5. Depicts scenes from the 1871 whaling disaster, in which 40 whaleships were caught by an early freeze, trapping 33 ships in the ice pack. Crew were transferred to the seven free ships, saving all 1,219 men, but the 33 ships were lost, a devastating blow to the already declining whaling industry. All marked "Proof" in lower margins and with identifying captions. Housed in their original mahogany frames with gold liners. Dimensions: 14.75" x 21" sight. Framed 18.5" x 24.5".
