DICK WHITTINGTON OLD D6375 - LARGE - ROYAL DOULTON CHAR...Dark green cap and robes.
The first Dick Whittington jug was styled on the character of a poor orphan boy who was employed in a London Kitchen, as described in a play dated 1605. He gave his cat to his employer to sell to earn money, but then ran away to escape his evil employer's cook who mistreated him. the Bow Bells rang as he fled and seemed to say, " Turn back, Whittington, Lord Mayor of London." He obeyed and found that his cat had fetched a huge sum, making a wealthy man. Royal Doulton backstamp.

Thin cream laid Japan paper with full margins, richly inked impression. Signed Whistler, 1859 lower right in the plate. Plate size 6 1/2" x 9 1/4", overall in a custom made Guido (Boston) frame 15 1/2" x 18 1/2". Good condition. Has not been removed from the frame.

Etching on cream wove paper, later edition (after the 1871 Thames), with wide margins, signed and dated in the plate lower left, in a white mat, unframed, overall with mat 20" x 17". Rotherhithe was made on the balcony of the Angel Inn at Rotherhithe, looking northwest toward the City; the dome of St. Paul's is visible on the horizon at the far left.
