General Orlando B. Willcox Medal of
General Orlando B. Willcox Medal of Honor Winner Oil Portrait Post-war oil painting on canvas of General Orlando B. Willcox in uniform unsigned 21.5 x 25.25 in. framed 27.5 x 31.25 in. Born in Detroit Orlando Bolivar Willcox (1823-1907) was a celebrated career United States Army officer who graduated West Point in 1847 and dedicated nearly 40 years service to his country before retiring as a regular brigadier general in 1887. Willcox served initially in the 4th Artillery during the later stages of the Mexican War fighting Indians on the Great Plains and during the Third Seminole War before resigning in 1857 to pursue a law career. In March 1895 General Willcox was awarded a Medal of Honor for ?distinguished gallantry? at First Bull Run where as colonel he commanded a brigade consisting of his own 1st Michigan Infantry and the famous 11th NY (Ellsworth??Ts) Fire Zouaves and ?led repeated charges until wounded and taken prisoner.? Subsequently Willcox was held at Richmond Charleston and Columbia South Carolina before being exchanged in August 1862 and promoted to brigadier general retroactive to July 21 1861 (Bull Run). Afterward Willcox was given command of a division in fellow 1847 classmate Ambrose Burnside??Ts Corps and fought steadily at Antietam and Fredericksburg. In 1863 he commanded the District of Indiana and Michigan before returning to divisional command for the grueling Knoxville Campaign. Once more under Burnside he led his division during Grant??Ts Overland Campaign receiving a brevet promotion to major general in August 1864 for ?actions after crossing the Rapidan.? General Willcox commanded the first troops to enter Petersburg following the lengthy siege. Orlando Willcox was twice brevetted in 1867 for his Civil War service (Spotsylvania and Petersburg) and reverted to colonel of the 12th Infantry in March 1869. Toward the end of his stellar career Willcox took command of the Department of the Arizona and ?effectively suppressed the raids of the Apache Indians and for his service in this conjunction received a votes of thanks form the Arizona Legislature.? Willcox was promoted to Brigadier General Regular Army in October 1886 and was placed on the statutory retirement list in April 1887. The general was among the last of the army??Ts surviving high-profile Civil War officers when he died at age 84 on May 11 1907. The general is buried at Arlington (Section 1 Grave 18). JOHN COX (1915-1990) PENCIL
JOHN COX (1915-1990) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPHJohn Rogers Cox (1915-1990)Wheat Shocks (1951)The striking lithograph published by Associated American Artists on cream wove paper in an edition of 250 prints is signed by the artist in pencil lower right below the image. A fine strong impression darkly saturated and with a nice burr.John Rogers Cox was a gallery director (youngest in the nation at the time) before taking up painting himself. He was a regionalist when regionalism wasn't cool, producing the bulk of his modest output (fewer than 20 paintings total) after leaving the army at the end of World War Two. His legacy is formidable. Every painting he produced can be accounted for and most are held in the permanent collections of American museums. Those that aren't in museums are listed as being in important collections.Image measures 8.75 x 11.75, sheet is 12 x 16 inches.Very, very good to fine condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair; nice, original, clean cream color paper free from toning, nicely saturated inks and burr making this an exceptional example.Provenance: Private collection, Des Moines, Iowa.

The Wallace Estate: Lee Renfrew Wallace and her husband Mahlon Brookings Wallace III lived an extremely happy and luxurious life filled with world travels, safaris, collecting, and philanthropy. From backgrounds in race-horse breeding and championship cattle ranching, the socialite couple paid homage to the St. Louis area community in a variety of ways.
Mr. Wallace served as Director of Commerce Bank, President of the St. Louis Zoo Friends Board, and was charitable to numerous organizations he believed in. Behind every great man is a better woman, and his wife Lee was renowned for being the glue of the family while she warmly served as Director of Development for local educational institutions and made an impact with her lasting spirit. The couple’s art collection ranges in style and period and spans a broad price-point.

JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH (AMERICAN,
JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH (AMERICAN, 1863–1935) 4" x 6 ¼" COGSHILL Christmas, 1922. Printblock of a town square designed by Jessie Wilcox Smith, reads "Greetings from Henrietta Cozens & Jessie Wilcox Smith in a cartouche lower right. "COGS" is an acronym standing for Cozens, Oakley, Green, and Smith, 4 women artists and roommates who were friends in the early 20th century. Henrietta Cozens (fl. 1900-1930s) was a horticulturalist and a friend of the artists Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott (1872-1954), Violet Oakley (1874-1961), and Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935). The three artists met in 1896 as students of the illustrator Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute, now Drexel University. After leaving Drexel, they rented an apartment at 1523 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, and Green joined them there. In 1902, the three artists held their first group exhibition at the Plastic Club, a professional organization for women artists on Camac Street in Philadelphia. After their experience renting studio space at Bryn Mawr College to escape the summer heat of the city, they decided in 1902 to lease the Red Rose Inn in Villanova, where they lived and worked until 1906. Henrietta Cozens joined them there, taking on the management of the household and the garden. The four women then moved to a farm in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, where architect Frank Miles Day designed a residence that they named Cogslea, a word that includes the acronym "Cogs," standing for Cozens, Oakley, Green, and Smith.
