William Sidney Mount (American 1807-1868) "The Storm" pencil on paper initialed "W.S.M" dated "July 8.68" and titled lower center 6 in. x 4 in. attractively matted and framed. Provenance: Childs Gallery Boston 1979; from the artist to Mrs. William Jones Seabury Long Island New York; to her grandson Andrew Oliver New York and Boston 1978; thence to Belle Cheniere. Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother's spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission a point belied by her and her daughter's anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.

AFTER WILLIAM S. MOUNT, THE BONE
AFTER WILLIAM S. MOUNT, THE BONE PLAYER, 1857W. SCHAUS (Publisher, 19th Century American) “THE BONE PLAYER”. Colored lithograph by “Lafosse, IMP. by Fois Delarue, Paris. Published by W. Schaus, New York 1857”. After a painting by William S. Mount. Scene shows a black man in colorful blue coat with red bow tie seated in chair with both hands held up playing two carved ivory bones in each hand.
Well framed in gilt with fine ivory matte. Reference: Illustrated as figure 47 in William Sidney Mount by Cowdrey & Williams 1944.
A rare print with much debated subject matter. A detailed and flattering depiction of a Black man from a time when this treatment was rare. However the reasoning for this is much debated. WILLIAM KEITH (AMERICAN
WILLIAM KEITH (AMERICAN 1838-1911) A PAINTING, "MOUNTAI...WILLIAM KEITH (American 1838-1911) A PAINTING, "Mountain Valley Landscape," oil on canvas, signed L/R. 24" x 36" Note: Beginning his career as an engraver in New York and then in San Francisco, William Keith honed his abilities as a painter under the tutelage of Samuel Marsden Brookes (1816-1892), dedicating his work exclusively to painting in 1868. Keith's friendship with naturalist John Muir expanded his appreciation and passion for the beauty of the American West. As represented in the present painting, Californian mountain vistas became a prominent subject in his work. The quality of his art production provided him the moniker "Dean of California Painters," and by the early 1900's he was one of the wealthiest artists in the country. Though a prolific artist, painting some 4,000 pieces his life, a fire in his studio in 1906 destroyed half of his holdings. Compared to landscapes of similar compositions by Keith and Albert Bierstadt, the present painting is likely a view of Donner Lake in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains. Provenance: Property from a Houston Estate.
Condition:
Overall in good condition, wax-lined canvas on original stretcher, small areas of inpainting visible under UV light, a few areas of minor craquelure, light varnish soiling and toning, but overall wear commensurate with age.
