William Sidney Mount (American 1807-1868) "The Storm" pencil on paper initialed "W.S.M" dated "July 8.68" and titled lower center 6 in. x 4 in. attractively matted and framed. Provenance: Childs Gallery Boston 1979; from the artist to Mrs. William Jones Seabury Long Island New York; to her grandson Andrew Oliver New York and Boston 1978; thence to Belle Cheniere. Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother's spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission a point belied by her and her daughter's anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.

Scene shows a black man in colorful blue coat with red bow tie seated in chair with both hands held up playing two carved ivory bones in each hand.
Well framed in gilt with fine ivory matte. Reference: Illustrated as figure 47 in William Sidney Mount by Cowdrey & Williams 1944.
A rare print with much debated subject matter. A detailed and flattering depiction of a Black man from a time when this treatment was rare. However the reasoning for this is much debated. A rare, museum quality piece, with the original painting owned by MFA Boston and another copy of this print in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

A Wedgwood Parian Bust of Colin Campbell Wedgwood Carrara Bust of Sir Colin Campbell England c. 1858 sculpted by E.W. Wyon mounted atop a waisted circular socle impressed marks and title on the back. Field Marshal Colin Campbell 1st Baron Clyde (1792 - 14 1863) was a British Army officer from Scotland who led the Highland Brigade in the Crimea and was in command of the 'Thin red line' at the battle of Balaclava. He later commanded the relief army in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
