Scene shows a black man in colorful blue coat with red bow tie seated in chair with both hands held up playing two carved ivory bones in each hand. Well framed in gilt with fine ivory matte. Reference: Illustrated as figure 47 in William Sidney Mount by Cowdrey & Williams 1944. A rare print with much debated subject matter. A detailed and flattering depiction of a Black man from a time when this treatment was rare. However the reasoning for this is much debated. A rare, museum quality piece, with the original painting owned by MFA Boston and another copy of this print in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. SIGHT SIZE: 29-1/2” x 23”.
