Two Cowboy's Porcelain Occupational Shaving Mugs
Early 20th Century
comprising an example bearing the name C. C. Newberry in gilt lettering and marked Koken Barber's Supply Co. and an example identified Sport Fambrough, stamped Germany on underside.
Height 4 inches.
Ivy Holt "Sport" Fambrough was born on December 6, 1892, in Rusky County, Texas to Sterling Price and Della Mae Andrews Fambrough. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 9, 1917, and served during World War I for two years until his discharge on April 1, 1919. Fambrough married Willie Albertine Whittington Cordell, and the couple had one son, Don (1922-2011). According to U.S. Federal Census records, he operated a meat market and worked as a butcher in Longview, Gregg County, Texas. The nickname purportedly came from his son, both a football player and coach for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Fambrough died on October 21, 1975.

Signed and titled along the bottom edge, with extensive inscriptions on the reverse. Presented in a frame that measures 22 1/2" x 38 1/2".
The artist wrote a lengthyparagraph with detailsof the work and of his personal resume in pencil tothe reverse of the canvas, including the many exotic locations around the world he's sold his paintings (including one presented to Eleanor Roosevelt). After that paragraph, he wrote this poem:
"P.S. Sentiment of the Painter - Beautiful scenes comes to your view - as you drift along on the Calcasieu - The Spanish moss in wondrous grace -adorns the trees like fairy lace - like long grey beards hangs from the trees - sways back and forth in the summer breeze / and this may be the last by me - no. 823 - Will Ousley- If I am a poet I don't know it."

Condition
Good condition. Near the left edge of the canvas is an old tear that has been patched up, with touch-ups to the paint layer. That is the only area with apparent in-painting or over-painting.
