LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA WALNUT TALL CASE CLOCKLancaster, Pennsylvania walnut tall case clock, ca. 1770, the broken arch bonnet with applied scroll carving enclosing an eight-day movement with floral engraved brass dial with central bird inscribed Wilmer Atkinson & Sons, the waist with blind fret carving over a serpentine top door centered by fluted quarter columns, all resting on ogee feet, 88 1/4" h. In tax records, Wilmer was listed in 1770 as a watchmaker and in 1772 and 1773 as a clockmaker. He married Anna Maria, daughter of the early borough clockmaker Abram Laroy. Legend states that Anna Maria also made clocks in Lancaster that were sold bearing her husband's name. A Wilton Atkinson clock is in the Lancaster Heritage Center collection, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Provenance: A Williamsport, Pennsylvania collection.
