Grain painted Federal tall case clock, white pine throughout with oak wooden works, hood front not hinged (as made), boldly painted green, red, yellow and grained, faux painted rosettes and plinths, gilt and painted wooden dial signed "R Whiting Winchester" (Riley Whiting, Winchester, Connecticut, died 1835), original pediment and feet, old probably original surface, inside of door with several inscriptions including "Jayne(?) 1837(?)", "1842", "23rd December 1846 Cleaned by Put Hollis Hershire NH(?)", Connecticut, 1819-1835, 89-1/4 x 17-1/4 x 10 in. Old probably original dry surface, original saddle board (no nail holes, case uprights each with 1 in. strip), bottom board partially missing, backboard with two gaps at lower case (probably as made), paint appears to be in excellent condition with scattered wear, abrasions, possible minor retouch, door catch replaced, no evidence of finials (one plinth post with saw marks probably as made). Purchased in Lillington, North Carolina; The Collection of Ella and Dennis Layne, Asheboro, North Carolina.

RILEY WHITING WINCHESTER CT -
RILEY WHITING WINCHESTER CT - 30-hour wooden movement shelf clock ca. 1832. Riley Whiting (1785-1835) ran a large clock manufacturing operation on the Mad River just north of present-day Winsted CT. He went was into shelf clock production about 1829 and until his death while on a trip to Illinois in 1835. This clock is a nice example of the 3/4 size case with fully carved Empire case with eagle splat and animal paw feet. The case is refinished but in good condition with minor flaws. The tablet in the door is modern but similar to those found in Whiting shelf clocks. The painted wood dial is period and in good condition with only slight loss.

HEPPLEWHITE TALL CASE CLOCK. American 1st half-19th century walnut. The case with a broken-arch pediment and a scroll-cut door crest and base; the wooden movement marked for Riley Whiting Winchester Connecticut. Imperfections. 92''h. Refinished replaced pull age cracks losses to moldings repaired break to one gooseneck note on the interior says that it was restored by Allan Pitcock Granville OH in 1978. The movement is not original to the case.
