A RARE SET OF TWELVE TIFFANY &
A RARE SET OF TWELVE TIFFANY & CO. STERLING SILVER DINN...A RARE SET OF TWELVE TIFFANY & CO. STERLING SILVER DINNER FORKS, OLYMPIAN PATTERN, ZEUS WITH HIS CHILDREN, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1878, designed under the direction of prolific American silversmith Edward C. Moore (1827-1891), in the Renaissance revival taste, elegant tines joined by a foliate scroll issuing a leafy vine that captures Hercules, his arm rests on the head of the nemean lion pelt, a winged Victory takes his club and is seated on the foot of Zeus who reclines tending to the smoking Delphic Tripod, and at his back Athena stands with helmet, owl at her shoulder and fruiting basket at her feet, verso a fruiting basket with symbols of battle and strategy, the neck with a spread lion's pelt, marked with the letter M, makers mark, and "Pat. 1878," length: 8", total approximate weight:32.25 troy oz. Note: An unusual pattern variation that shows Zeus's judgement of the battle between his sons, Heracles and Apollo, over the Delphic Tripod. In this scene Zeus seems uninterrupted by the folly of his children. With ease, reclining even, he judges the tussle, and Heracles receives his just punishment for bad behavior. Athena's presence and gesture reminds the viewer of Zeus' job to discern the truth. The overall moralizing theme of loyalty, respect and duty among siblings as judged in the eyes of their father. An appealing utensil with classical themes of paternal judgment and understandable family dilemmas. Height: 8.00"
Condition:
Some tines slightly bent inward, apparent surface scratching and overall dulled surface, rubbing of figures with some losses, and in overall good condition, wear commensurate with age and use. ROMAN BRONZE REPOUSSE FRAGMENT OF A
ROMAN BRONZE REPOUSSE FRAGMENT OF A VICTORYRoman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An impressive bronze repousse presenting the finely detailed relief of a winged victory or the goddess Victoria (Greek Nike) in stride and facing left as she raises her right hand. Lengthy robes cascade down her body, nicely portraying her movement. Her left hand holds the fabric of her robe, just below her belted waist, making it easier for her to walk forward. Shown in profile, her visage displays a petite mouth, a naturalistic nose, full cheeks, and an almond-shaped eye, all beneath an elegant updo. A feathered wing peaks out from behind her back. A repousse like this example likely decorated the armor of a soldier. A pair of petite perforations are displayed at the bottom of the piece for attachment. Size: 2.7" W x 4.5" H (6.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
This gorgeous repousse may be either a portrayal of the goddess Victoria, who was a major part of Roman society and symbolized both success in war and triumph over death, or a winged victory, who represented the spirit of victory, rather than the goddess herself. Central to Roman iconography, winged victories are often found in pairs decorating the squandrels of Roman arches. Interestingly, portrayals of these winged women continued after the Christianization of the empire and, thus, evolved into the depiction of Christian angels.
