A mid 19th century South GermanA mid 19th century South German carved yew and limewood figural chess set the Kings possibly representing Charlemagne the knights as rearing horses the bishops wearing caps rooks with pointed pierced spires and the pawns as countrymen with broad rimmed hats carrying walking sticks and tied pouches together with the original boxwood box the sides finely carved with low relief flowers and foliage the sliding top chequer inset as the games board veneered with satin birch and burr yew within a chevron inlaid outer border 13.75in. square Kings 4.5in. Pawns 2.25in. Estimate ?2 000-4 000 For a very similar chess set in limewood see Christies South Kensington Lot 47 2nd May 2007 (part of the Dr. Jean-Claude Cholet collection of chess sets). Yew set: Pawns - four lack their walking sticks two of these also have chips to fronts of hats. Rooks - both have their pointed spires missing Knights - one with front leg missing one with head missing Bishops - each lack staves? they may have been carrying Queen - her left forearm missing Limewood set: Pawns - one missing at plinth and one detached from plinth at the ankles Rooks - one with tiny finial to pointed spire missing Knights - one with head and left front leg missing. Bishops - one missing and one with stave? he may have been carrying missing.. The chess board - some chevron inlay missing for approximately 3cm at two opposing corners. The box - all sides with some losses of fine low relief foliate carving although ten detached pieces are present. The gilt metal cross topped with separate bishop's miter set with seven faceted amethyst stones (tested) & synthetic rubies suspended from a heavy gilt metal chain 50'' long. Late 19th-early 20th century. The cross is made of gilt bronze.
