Frederick Wetzel studied biology as an undergraduate and worked as Natural History Curator for the Lehigh County Cultural Center. He was a life-long supporter of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pennsylvania, on the Appalachian flyway, and his observations and activism helped pass the Model Hawk Law in 1970. Wetzel’s art training came under Conrad Roland, with the strong influence of Louis Agassiz Fuertes. In addition to creating his own ornithological art, he taught painting and exhibited at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
