ATTRIBUTED WOOTON, WALNUT ROTARY EXECUTIVE DESK Unmarked, late 19th century, one part form, rectangular top with later inset leather writing surface, three side-by-side drawers, open knee-hole with convex walls, each side cabinet hinged and rotating to reveal an open divided interior to the right and a divided interior to the left with (24) file drawers, finished on all sides including panels and incised lines.

AMERICAN WOOTON FLAT TOP DESK. Patented January 18, 1876, walnut with pine secondary. Pull out writing surface and one side, three dovetailed drawers on reverse. Two revolving side sections with fitted interiors and fold out work surfaces, raised panels, chamfered corners and original die stamped metal label. Refinished, putty filled age cracks on top and top has been re-pegged. 29.5"h. 39.75"w. 25.5"d.

STANDARD GRADE WOOTON DESK Wooton Desk Co. label Indianapolis Indiana circa 1875 having a Renaissance Revival style walnut cabinet the double doors opening to a centralized fall-front writing desk with a bank of pigeon holes to the left right and below. Closed dimensions: 62''H x 42''W x 26.75''D. The desk shows moderate wear throughout from age and use with dings chips scratches and a few cracks to the wood. The door hinges need to be adjusted so the doors can close easily.

An American Renaissance Carved
An American Renaissance Carved and Burl Walnut Wooten Desk c. 1874 pedimented crest above a pair of paneled doors with mail slots hinged on each side extensively fitted interior and fall front with inset tooled leather writing surface scrolled feet casters height 76 in. width 46 in. depth 34 in. Provenance: Estate of Julia Badger Grand Rivers KY. Note: Beginning in 1874 Indianian William Wooten began manufacturing innovative desks with American civil servants in mind. Bankers lawyers and captains of industry soon found them indispensable however. Used by dignitaries such as Smithsonian Director Spencer Baird philanthropist Joseph Pulitzer and railroad magnate Jay Gould the desks were praised by London dealers Richards Terry and Co. "Nothing in its line can exceed it in usefulness or beauty and purchasers everywhere express themselves delighted with its manifold conveniences." Boasting one hundred and ten compartments they came in four grades: ordinary standard extra and superior.
