ERTE (ROMAIN DE TIRTOFF, 1892 -
ERTE (ROMAIN DE TIRTOFF, 1892 - 1990): TANAGRAErte (Romain De Tirtoff, 1892 - 1990) Tanagra, cold-painted bronze 1988; signed, dated, and numbered 301/500, published by Seven Arts LTD, London cold-painted bronze Dimensions: 20 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 8 in. (52.1 x 29.2 x 20.3 cm.) Provenance: Erte prints may seem ubiquitous, but they are far from the only art he created. His long-term connection with Harper's Bazaar has produced some of the most recognizable and exquisite Art Deco illustrations of the 20th century. But, from the start of his career in 1915 until his death in 1990, Erte produced paintings, prints, sculpture, stage sets, and costumes, and even a set of champagne flutes. He is often regarded as having two careers; one pre-World War II, and a second from the 1960s till his passing. Erte Art Deco prints are credited for a refreshed interest in the Art Deco movement in the artist's later years. Erte prints offer style and affordability that, whether muted or bright, convey a delicious sense of luxury. Erte artwork for sale or at auction usually finds a home very quickly. Consider the world of figural prints for sale at Invaluable from world-famous or budding artists to showcase your interest in the experimental side of art. Condition:

MODEL OF THE SCHOONER YACHT
MODEL OF THE SCHOONER YACHT ATLANTIC A hull model of the schooner yacht Atlantic 1903, the planked deck of the model is planked and is fitted with three masts and numerous details, raised on stand with plaque. 32.25? H x 37.5? W x 7.5? D. Note: The schooner yacht Atlantic was built for Wilson Marshall, designed by William Gardner of Gardner and Cox in 1903. Atlantic's claim to fame came in 1905 when she was one of eleven yachts to compete for the Emperor's Cup put up by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany for a race from New York to Lizard Head, England. She was captained by Charlie Barr, a two-time Americas Cup winner, who drove Atlantic through a violent gale and crossing the Atlantic in 12 days, 4 hours. She was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard for World War II, and was later used for sail training at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Eventually she was broken up, and attempts to salvage her for restoration failed. She ended her career on the banks of the Delaware River.

GEORGES CHéNARD-HUCHé
GEORGES CHéNARD-HUCHé (1864-1937): VILLAGEOil on canvas, 1910, signed 'Chénard-Huché' and dated lower left, titled on a label on the stretcher.
21 1/2 x 29 in., unframed.
Note: This George Chénard-Huché painting, along with the two following lots, has an amazing history of loss and recovery during World War II, as told to us by the original owner's family. The renowned French art dealer Paul Rosenberg and his family managed to escape France during the occupation, making their way through Portugal to the United States. Rosenberg represented Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse and was considered among the world’s greatest dealers of modern art at the time. His art collection, however, did not escape the Nazis who looted the Rosenberg collection, storing a large number of works at the Jeu de Paume in Paris during the war. Paul's son, Alexandre Rosenberg, was not allowed to leave France with his family as he was of conscription age but managed to escape to Britain in 1940 where he joined De Gaulle's Free French Forces. In the summer of 1944, as the Germans fled Paris they loaded a special train, number 40044, with the looted art stored at the museum. After several attempts, the train was eventually stopped at the Aulnay-sous-Bois station north of Paris by a small unit from General Leclerc's Second Armored Division. In an amazing coincidence, the unit was commanded by Lieutenant Alexandre Rosenberg who recognized some of the paintings from his father's collection. This incredible story was loosely adapted in the 1965 movie The Train, which starred Burt Lancaster as a Resistance fighter and hero of the movie. It was the first movie to address the Nazi looting of art during the war and brought important public awareness to the issue.

ROY LICHTENSTEIN (1923-1997):
ROY LICHTENSTEIN (1923-1997): THINKING NUDE (FROM NUDES)Roy Lichtenstein, American, (1923-1997) Thinking Nude (from Nudes) AFTER CONSERVATION, color lithograph signed in blue ink color lithograph Dimensions: Image: 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.; Sheet: 8 1/2 x 11 in. Provenance: Roy Fox Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. His artwork was considered to be "disruptive". He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City. Whaam! and Drowning Girl are generally regarded as Lichtenstein's most famous works. Drowning Girl, Whaam!, and Look Mickey are regarded as his most influential works.[8] His most expensive piece is Masterpiece, which was sold for $165 million in January 2017. Early years: Lichtenstein was Jewish, although he "played down his roots" and "didn't speak often of being Jewish".[10] His family was upper middle class.[1][11][12] His father, Milton, was a real estate broker, his mother, Beatrice (Werner), a homemaker.[13] He was raised on the Upper West Side and attended public school until the age of twelve. He then attended New York's Dwight School, graduating from there in 1940. Lichtenstein first became interested in art and design as a hobby, through school.[14] He was an avid jazz fan, often attending concerts at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.[14] He frequently drew portraits of the musicians playing their instruments.[14] In his last year of high school, 1939, Lichtenstein enrolled in summer classes at the Art Students League of New York, where he worked under the tutelage of Reginald Marsh.[15] Career: Lichtenstein then left New York to study at Ohio State University, which offered studio courses and a degree in fine arts.[1] His studies were interrupted by a three-year stint in the Army during and after World War II between 1943 and 1946.[1] After being in training programs for languages, engineering, and pilot training, all of which were cancelled, he served as an orderly, draftsman, and artist.[1] Lichtenstein returned home to visit his dying father and was discharged from the Army with eligibility for the G.I. Bill.[14] He returned to studies in Ohio under the supervision of one of his teachers, Hoyt L. Sherman, who is widely regarded to have had a significant impact on his future work (Lichtenstein would later name a new studio he funded at OSU as the Hoyt L. Sherman Studio Art Center).[16] Lichtenstein entered the graduate program at Ohio State and was hired as an art instructor, a post he held on and off for the next ten years. In 1949 Lichtenstein received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio State University. In 1951, Lichtenstein had his first solo exhibition at the Carlebach Gallery in New York.[1][17] He moved to Cleveland in the same year, where he remained for six years, although he frequently traveled back to New York. During this time he undertook jobs as varied as a draftsman to a window decorator in between periods of painting.[1] His work at this time fluctuated between Cubism and Expressionism.[14] In 1954, his first son, David Hoyt Lichtenstein, now a songwriter, was born. His second son, Mitchell Lichtenstein, was born in 1956.[18] In 1957, he moved back to upstate New York and began teaching again.[4] It was at this time that he adopted the Abstract Expressionism style, being a late convert to this style of painting.[19] Lichtenstein began teaching in upstate New York at the State University of New York at Oswego in 1958. About this time, he began to incorporate hidden images of cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny into his abstract works. Condition: Please see photos for attached conservation report

He had a small craft store in Paris, in the third Arrondissement until 1940. Karner worked mainly on his own with apprentices. He specialized in carved wood and elegant home decoration. From bookends to cocktail picks, from desk accessories to decorative lamps, his creations were always refined and in limited edition. One morning in 1940, he never came to open his workshop. Karner was of Jewish origin and the story said he left Paris and crossed all France and the Pyrenees to flee from the German occupation of Paris. He never came back to France after World War II, but some pieces can be found on the market with his signature and the following mention, "Creaciones - Barcelona - Spain''. This could indicate, he was successful in his trip to Spain and freedom and was able to re-establish his activities in Barcelona."
