GUSTAVE MICHEL (FRENCH, 1851-1924) VIDE-DE-POCHE "THE WRESTLERS" Circa 1880, gilt bronze with two nude men wrestling on a shell. Signed 'G. Michel' and numbered 'A763' with foundry mark.
Gustave Michel (French, 1851-1924)
Gustave Michel was a French sculptor and medallist. Born in Paris to parents who, despite their modest means, supported his early artistic vocation, Michel studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jouffroy. Having made a name for himself as a statuaire, collaborating with established artists on their large-scale works, he began exhibiting at the Salon from 1875. Achieving tremendous success during his own lifetime, both in his native France, as well as abroad, Gustave Michel is scarcely remembered now, and apart from public monuments and commissions, his work is rarely seen.

SIR THOMAS BROCK (BRITISH
SIR THOMAS BROCK (BRITISH 1847-1922)SIR THOMAS BROCK (BRITISH 1847-1922)
Hercules and Antaeus , 1869
bronze with dark brown patina
height including base: 108 cm (42.5 in.)
signed, dated and inscribed with edition number 4/99 on base
LOT NOTES
Sir Thomas Brock was born in Worcester, England in 1847. He was commissioned to create many significant works of sculpture for Queen Victoria. Most famous is his imperial memorial to Queen Victoria. The work is now in front of Buckingham Palace where he was knighted in 1911. Sir Thomas Brock’s sculptures echo style and allegory commonplace in Baroque era sculpture. Sir Thomas Brock’s sculptures were later associated with the New Sculpture Movement. The New Sculpture Movement focuses on the renewal of classicized British sculpture adding a new “elegance” and “vitality”. In his piece “Wrestlers”, it is evident that Sir Thomas Brock was strongly influenced by Hellenistic and Baroque sculpture. The two men are twisting around each other, as the smaller man is pulled upwards -- his face full of agony. The defined muscles and arms of both men are intertwining. There is a terrific sense of tension and force being exerted as both men try to overcome the strength of the other. The work is an exemplar of Brock’s wonderous ability to demonstrate varieties in texture, depict hair and emotion-filled facial expressions, and evoke a sense of the piece being a “frozen” in time -- a particular moment within a time of dynamic movement and chaos; there is a sense of potential energy.
The piece is likely a depiction of Hercules slaying Antenaeus. The mythical giant Antenaeus was the son of Gaia, goddess of earth. Because of this, Antenaeus was strong and undefeatable when in contact with the earth. Knowing this, Hercules lifted Antenaeus into the air and squeezed him to death.
Both this piece of artwork in particular, as well as the story of Hercules Slaying Antenaeus, can be seen as allegorical to the story of David and Goliath. However, the story of Hercules Slaying Antenaeus clearly differs in that Anetaeus, the loser of the brawl, is a giant.

CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961)
CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) "WRESTLING"Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Olympic Centennial Games - Wrestling" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Freestyle Wrestling Classic Collection Series stamp issued May 2, 1996.
Freestyle wrestling was featured in both the 1904 and 1908 Olympic Games, but in 1912 it was replaced by the Greco-Roman discipline. Not until the 1920 Games, at Antwerp, were athletes able to compete in both forms of wrestling. Internationally, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling are the two most widely used and accepted wrestling styles. These are the only two styles permitted in annual world championships, as well as in the Olympic Games. Athletes who compete in freestyle wrestling are allowed to use nearly any hold, trip or throw, while the Greco-Roman form is more limited -- these wrestlers may not seize their opponents below the hips or grasp in any way with the legs. Both styles take place on a raised platform with slightly sloping sides. A wrestling bout lasts for nine minutes and is made up of three rounds of three minutes each. Wrestlers score points for effective holds, positions of advantage and near-throws.

YOSHITORA UTAGAWA WOODBLOCK "BATTLE
YOSHITORA UTAGAWA WOODBLOCK "BATTLE OF DAN'NOURA" 1861Yoshitora Utagawa (Japanese, active 1830-1880). "The Great Battle of Dan'noura" woodblock (triptych), Edo period, 1861. Marks: censor's seal aratame. A striking woodblock triptych by Yoshitora Utagawa depicting one of the most famous conflicts in Japanese history, the Great Battle of Dan'noura which ended the Genpei war between the Minamoto and the Taira during the 12th century. The three woodblocks are delineated in classic ukiyo'e style featuring characteristic birds-eye views, a penchant for strong line, and an appreciation for brilliant, saturated hues that are hallmarks of this fine Japanese artform. An impressive composition set in a custom frame under glass. Size of sight view: 13.5" L x 29.25" W (34.3 cm x 74.3 cm) Size of frame: 19.375" L x 40.625" W (49.2 cm x 103.2 cm)
Woodblock prints were created in Japan as early as the 8th century to illustrate texts. By the 18th century Japanese woodblock techniques had evolved, and the first polychrome prints or nishiki-e were commissioned for wealthy patrons of the Edo period. This period was known for marvelous woodblock prints of female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, and courtesans of the infamous pleasure districts. In time the repertoire expanded to include romantic landscapes, flora and fauna, and dramatic historical events such as the Battle of Dan-no-Ura. Woodblocks like Yoshitora Utagawa's played a major role in the West's perception of Japanese visual culture during the late 19th century when Japonism exerted a powerful influence on French Impressionists such as Degas, Manet, and Monet, Post-Impressionists including Van Gogh, even pioneering Art Nouveau artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec.
