Asheville, N.C. painting, A. Wyant, mountain stream, titled verso backing "Asheville, N.C.", unsigned, attributed to Alexander Helwig Wyant, New York, 1836-1892, oil on canvas, verso backing "This picture was painted by Wyant, during his residence at the Sherwood Studio Building, West 57th St., New York City. It was given to my uncle, Henry Lord, in recognition of his kindness during the early years of Wyant's student-ship. The large canvas, afterwards copied from this sketch by Wyant, was purchased for $10,000 by Thomas R. Ryan, for his private collection. I am giving the sketch to Dr. Russell Norborn as a momento [sic], and with gratitude for the part he played in my behalf, as a 'Happy medium' Zaidee(?) Lord Murphy", copy of presumed original label "Philip Suval Fine Arts, New York", 9-1/4 x 6 in.; carved and gilt wood Arts and Crafts style step-reeded plate frame. Laid on wood panel, accretion from frame, abrasion at edges, scattered light retouch.

Note: Frame bears old label verso discussing this painting: "...this painting is mentioned in Scribner's Encyclopedia of Paintings, page 453 volume 4...This painting was painted in 1871. It is similar to the one Corcoran Gallery (sic.)Washington, but is of much superior quality. The picture has been bought from the estate of George Haines Stamford Conn. Haines bought it from Wyant."Frame bears label for Marshall Field and Company, Chicago, Illinois , with an illegible artist name. Presumably the frame was originally on a different painting.
