She was built in 1868 for James Lloyd Ashbury, and in 1870, en route to the Cup match, she engaged in a transatlantic race with James Gordon Bennett's Dauntless. In the 1870 America's Cup, Cambria placed eighth out of 14 contestants. She raced with the New York Yacht Club fleet for the rest of the season before returning to England in late 1870.This painting depicts Cambria in a race off buoy #10, at Southwest Spit on the old N.Y.Y.C. race course near Sandy Hook Lightship. A tugboat is seen on the left horizon, and an unidentified private steam yacht on the right. The schooner is racing a black-hulled sloop, the most likely candidate is the yacht Gracie.

ALVIN YORK SIGNED LETTERA letter on The Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute letterhead. Sergeant York was a highly decorated WWI soldier. After attempting multiple times to avoid enlisting due to his religious beliefs he was assigned to the Meuse Argonne Offensive. October 1918 his unit found themselves behind German lines with York having to take command. His leadership resulted in the capture of 132 German soldiers. He received the Medal of Honor and the Croix de Guerre for his bravery. After a much celebrated return to the USA he focused on educating the youth of the Jamestown Tennessee area. He used money received from the movie "Sergeant York" with Gary Cooper to help fund The Agricultural Institute. Letterhead approx. 8" L x 10-5/8" H. One of severa historic American paper items in today's auction. From a large and important collection of autographs and documents, many pieces of which will be offered in the March American Sale. Staple mark to upper right corner, folds, hole across watermark, which does not interfere with text or autograph. See images for more details on condition. This item can be shipped in-house.
