New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1928. 8vo brown flexible leatherette boards Zane Grey's blindstamp on free endpaper. Thought to have been issued for family and friends in a small printing. Includes Grey Zane. ''My Own Life'' and ''What the Open Means to Me;'' ''Zane Grey and the American Spirit'' by John Farrar; ''American Sagas'' by T.K. Whipple; ''The Epic Spirit'' by Rupert Hughes; ''Never Lay Down Your Pen'' by John Wanamaker; and ''His Many Readers'' by L.H. Robbins plus Bibliography. Spine ends a bit worn as is high edge of spine on rear. Corners bumped. The Spirit of the Border (sequel to Betty Zane his first book) and The Last Trail (sequel to Spirit of the Border) both London: Hodder and Stoughton n.d. (ca 1925). Both inscribed and signed To Mildred from Zane Grey on ffep in Grey's typical purple ink. Both in embossed red cloth with H & S logo. Moderate to heavy toning of pages. Front hinge weak on ''Spirit'' and scuffing of first gathering. Plus early edition probably first of Spirit of the Border New York: A.L. Burt 1906. 8vo blue cloth with black design red lettering on spine and front; dustjacket not clipped; 266pp. Wear to spine ends small chips missing from dj light surface soil on back section. Grey's early series focused on native encounters with settlers in the eastern woodlands beginning with a profile of his ancestor Betty Zane. He would of course be better known for his stories of the far West (or ''later West '' since the Northwest Territory was the ''early West'').
