This version is extremely close in size to David's earlier version in the National Gallery of London, but differs in small details. NOTE: Our specialist has identified the painting as the sole work recorded by the artist, an archer serving under Philip of Spain, Lord of the Netherlands, reigning as Philip II of Spain in 1556. Condition:
Relined with new stretchers; a few old well repaired tears visible from the front; under blacklight, overpainting, reglazing, and inpainting, notably to the figure of Balthazar, the figures of the Virgin and Christ with minor inpainting. A vertical line and a horizontal line more visible under blacklight, possibly from having been folded in the past or old stretcher marks.Old rabbet rubbing evident across the bottom and edges.Small scattered and minor losses to the painting surfaces, typical craquelure.
