EMMA LAMPERT COOPER (AMERICAN, 1855-1920) MOROCCAN COAST Oil artist board. Signed 'E. Lampert Cooper' (lower left).
Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920)
Emma Lampert Cooper was born in 1860 near Rochester, New York. Upon leaving the area, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League in New York, and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. Later returning to Rochester, she taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1893-1897 and was active in the art life of the city until her marriage to the painter Colin Campbell Cooper from 1897. After traveling in Europe for a period of time, the couple settled in New York City. There, working in an impressionist style, she turned to her husband’s favorite theme, the architectural treasures of New York and other historic cities.
The Coopers traveled constantly in search of subjects and in the spring of 1913, they visited Charleston, South Carolina. Though nothing is known about their stay, their visit is recorded in Colin’s paintings of some of the city’s most historic and cherished structures, including St. Philip’s Church, Charleston. During their trip, they also visited Beaufort, a small coastal town about seventy miles south of Charleston, noted for its picturesque buildings, alleyways, and streets. Emma’s Old Beaufort, South Carolina is of a subject that she and Colin both painted, probably side-by-side and on the same day. Fluent brushwork and radiant color are typical of her vivacious style.

William Aiken Walker (American, 1838-1921)
William Aiken Walker was an American artist best known for genre paintings of black sharecroppers. He also documented the American civil ware era during his service in the confederate army. William Aiken Walker was born to an Irish Protestant father and a mother of South Carolina background in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Walker was conscripted into the Confederate Army and was sent to Morris Island as part of the Palmetto Guard. Almost immediately, Walker was sent on to Richmond and Camp Davis. He was medically discharged from the army four months later. For the remainder of the war, he served as a civilian draftsman to the Confederate Engineers Corps and made maps and drawings of Charleston’s defenses. After the Civil War, Walker moved to Baltimore, where he produced small paintings of the “Old South” to sell as tourist souvenirs. He is best known for his paintings depicting the lives of poor black emancipated slaves, especially sharecroppers in the post-reconstruction American South.

William Lee completed his apprenticeship in Charleston to Joshua Lockwood and began advertising in the Charleston newspapers in 1768. In the early 1770s his former master recommended him to the vestry at St. Michael's Church as "a journeyman very capable of taking care of the clock" while he (Lockwood) was abroad in England. The vestry was apparently very satisfied with Lee, giving him the position permanently, as well as £20 more per year than they had been paying Lockwood.
In 1769 "William Lee, Clock and Watch-maker" married "Miss Anne Theus, Daughter of Mr. Jeremiah Theus." Anne's portrait, by her father, is in the MESDA collection (acc. 1179). William Lee died in 1804 leaving a sizeable estate worth more than $2,000.
