Early in his career, Willis wrote to James Montgomery Flagg and sought advice on samples of his work. Flagg responded with words of advice, and a friendship grew between them. Willis Birchman and his correspondence with Flagg are mentioned by Flagg in his autobiography (Roses and Buckshot. Flagg James. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1946.) Birchman was also author of a book that has an introduction written by Flagg. (Faces & Facts by and About 26 Contemporary Artists, Birchman, Willis, Biographies by. FLORIDA JOURNEY BOOK 1886"Petals
FLORIDA JOURNEY BOOK 1886"Petals Plucked from Sunny Climes", by Silvia Sunshine. Silvia took an extensive trip in the late 1870s from Savannah, Georgia through all parts of Florida, down to Key West and even around Cuba, noting things of interest in nature and mankind. Many detailed stories - great reading! One great color plate, several engravings. Second edition, 1886, 495 pages. Printed for the author by Southern Methodist Publishing House. Nashville, TN. Still tightly bound, with slight yellowing of pages and almost no foxing (some on colored engraving). One page has very old tape repair. Bound in red cloth, gilt lettering of title on spine plus a number "19" in ink (probably from library). No lettering on front cover. Spine shows, fading wear and likely insect damage, with slight surface insect damage to outside covers. Inside pages supple and in fine condition. Overall very good condition.
